Reconnecting with Her Husband After Seven Years

Alanh, a successful woman in Cambodia, had been married for seven years. She told the team that just a few months after the wedding, she could no longer communicate with her husband. He seemed different from the man she had dated. After having children, their conversations became almost entirely about parenting, with little emotional connection. She came to ME&WE largely considering divorce.

After her first session, she realised why her husband increasingly wanted to see friends despite her nagging and displeasure. Her intended solution—irritation, nagging and arguments so he would understand her discomfort and change—was the biggest reason he no longer enjoyed coming home or felt the warmth of family life. Whenever he wanted to talk about work, she also dismissed him impatiently, or assumed that because their jobs were different, she would not understand.

The coach’s questions helped Alanh rediscover why she had married her husband and understand why he had changed. Most importantly, she realised that she could regain her happiness quickly. During the second session, she took out her phone and video-called him—something she had never done in their seven years together—and said, ‘I love you,’ in Khmer.
