Are Limiting Beliefs Holding You Back from Your Dreams?

Are Limiting Beliefs Holding You Back from Your Dreams?

A man walked past an elephant camp and noticed that the elephants were neither caged nor chained. The only thing stopping them from escaping was a small rope tied around one leg.

He was bewildered: why did the elephants not use their strength to break the rope and leave? They could easily

do so, yet they simply accepted the rope that held them.

Curious, he asked a nearby trainer why they stood there and never tried to escape.

The trainer replied:

‘When they were young, we used ropes the same size to tie them up. At that age they could not break them. Growing up, they continued believing they could not get away. They still believe the rope can hold them, so they never try.’

The elephants stayed only because they had come to believe escape was impossible. Their minds were trapped in the past and bound by limiting beliefs, so they never tried to change their future.

Humans sometimes live within similarly invisible limits. The difference is that we can remove them to pursue our dreams and enjoy life the way we want.

What Are Limiting Beliefs?

Limiting beliefs stop us pursuing our goals and desires—following a passion, applying for a dream job or finding love, for example. They prevent new experiences and enjoying life fully.

Limiting beliefs are barriers we create ourselves.

Beliefs set the boundaries of what you consider reasonable and keep you in your comfort zone. Rooted in your subconscious, they influence what you think, say and do.

They prevent you becoming who you want to be. Like the elephant trapped beside the circus fence, limiting beliefs keep you in place, sometimes without you noticing.

Common limiting beliefs include:

  • I am not good enough for this job.

  • I am too old to try something new.

  • I am too young for that.

  • I have never done this before, so I will definitely fail.

  • I am not attractive enough to attend this event…

These beliefs often do not reflect reality; they are barriers we create ourselves.

Why Do We Have Limiting Beliefs?

Limiting beliefs are usually unconscious thoughts acting as a defence mechanism against possible disappointment, failure or negative emotions.

You may have endured an unwanted experience. Facing a similar situation now, your subconscious tries to prevent it happening again. Finding the root of the issue that created a limiting belief is therefore an important first step in overcoming it.

Limiting beliefs can also arise from:

  • Personal beliefs: experiences you have lived through that create particular mental barriers.

  • Family experiences and beliefs: your upbringing and the ideas and behaviours observed and reinforced throughout life.

  • Your environment: people around you and their influence on your thinking.

  • Society: imposed standards can create limiting beliefs.

  • Messages on social media.

These beliefs can nevertheless be replaced with more positive messages. Changing your thinking can change your life.

How Can You Overcome Limiting Beliefs?

Removing beliefs deeply rooted over a long time is not easy. With commitment and determination it is possible. These steps help transform them and regain confidence in your own journey of growth.

Recognise Your Limiting Beliefs

Identify the limiting beliefs you hold.

Many beliefs are so ingrained that we do not know they exist. Recognise them by asking:

  • What negative thoughts appear when I face a challenge?

  • What do I always tell myself about the future?

Negative thoughts passing through your mind at such moments may be limiting beliefs obstructing your development.

Having several limiting beliefs simultaneously is completely normal. To avoid overwhelm and achieve the best results, work on one at a time.

Identifying them generally requires strong self-awareness. Journalling, speaking with trusted friends or family, or working with professionals can help explore and recognise them.

Understand Their Impact

Now you recognise your beliefs, consider how they hold you back or affect you.

  • Which new opportunities have you refused because you felt unready?

  • How much time have you spent procrastinating because of this belief?

Trace the Belief to Its Roots

Limiting beliefs rarely arise without a cause. What past experiences made you believe this?

  • Was it a negative comment from someone you knew?

  • Was it a previous failure?

  • Or someone in your family saying you could not do it?

Finding a belief’s origin is key to removing it.

Challenge Your Limiting Beliefs

Once identified and understood, challenge the belief by asking questions such as:

  • Is this belief really justified? What evidence supports it?

  • Have I always thought this? If not, what changed?

  • Is there evidence contradicting my belief?

  • What would happen if I believed the opposite?

  • Does it help me move towards my goals?

  • How would I view this belief as someone else, perhaps someone I admire?

These questions broaden and shift your perspective. Answering them mentally or on paper may show the belief is not entirely true, allowing a more positive understanding.

Gather evidence from past experiences showing the belief is mistaken. Without concrete past evidence, consider reasons it might not be true. You do not need complete conviction; you only need reasons that could disprove it.

If you feel unqualified to apply for a position, for example, list your achievements and skills. You may see that your limiting belief does not reflect reality.

Limiting beliefs often do not reflect reality

Monitor your inner dialogue too. Limiting beliefs appear in how we speak to and about ourselves. When you notice negative self-talk, challenge it immediately with reasons and evidence that it is not fact.

Replace It with a New Belief

Having challenged the old belief, replace it with a more positive one:

For example:

You believe you are not good enough for a new role.

⇒ Evidence shows you already have solid foundational knowledge. By working to develop it and improve some soft skills, you can begin in the new role.

This becomes your new belief.

The transition may be difficult. Living with an old belief can create a strong emotional attachment rooted in the subconscious. Changing your thinking and accepting a new belief can require strength and courage.

Take Action to Reinforce the New Belief

Beliefs become reality through action. Start with small steps showing you can move beyond your limits.

For example, take the belief: ‘You are too old to pursue your passion.’

Replace it with:

‘It is never too late to start something.

With hard work and continued learning, I can pursue my passion and turn what I want into reality.’

Plan specific actions supporting that belief:

‘I will learn for 15 minutes and practise for 30 minutes every day.’

Volunteer for a project in which you have little experience, or try a new activity. Challenge limiting beliefs instead of retreating in fear. Repeated challenges gradually reveal that the fear lacks foundation and becomes easier to overcome.
