How Coaching Differs from Other Approaches
Distinguishing Coaching from Therapy, Mentoring, Teaching, Consulting and Counselling
Coaching is an effective equal partnership between an individual or group and a professional coach in self-discovery and awareness. Its ultimate aim is to help people achieve chosen goals by discovering and using resources they already possess.
This article distinguishes coaching from therapy, consulting, counselling, training or teaching, and mentoring—approaches often confused with it—so you can choose support suited to your needs and goals.
COACHING VS THERAPY
Therapy, or psychotherapy, is a longer-term process with a healthcare professional to diagnose and address problematic beliefs, behaviours, relationships, emotions and sometimes physical responses. It explores past hurt to change self-destructive habits, improve relationships and move through painful feelings. In other words, it examines past and inner experience to resolve earlier issues and create a happier, more stable future.
In coaching, clients work with a coach rather than a healthcare professional to clarify goals, identify obstacles and problematic behaviours, and plan action. The main distinction is taking the client’s present position as the starting point for an action strategy. Coaches empower clients to take charge and make changes towards the future they want.

At ME&WE, we combine coaching and therapeutic approaches for the best possible outcomes. Coaching questions explore origins, solutions and psychological barriers. Appropriate psychological methods address those origins and barriers so clients can implement solutions as simply and comfortably as possible.
COACHING VS CONSULTING
In consulting, individuals or organisations hire specialists for expertise. Methods vary, but consultants generally diagnose problems, propose solutions and sometimes implement them.
Coaching supports individuals or groups in finding their own solutions through helpful, self-discovery-based methods and frameworks.
COACHING VS TRAINING AND TEACHING
A specialist teacher or trainer transmits knowledge. Training programmes follow objectives set by trainers and offer linear learning paths aligned with an established curriculum.
Coaching goals are clarified during the process but set by coachees with guidance. Coaches need not act as subject experts; they focus on people, existing inner resources and developing potential. There is no fixed route, because sessions follow clients’ own stories and experiences.
COACHING VS MENTORING
Mentors guide people to learn or develop faster than alone, usually drawing on considerable expertise and experience in a field.
Mentoring often focuses on the future, career development and broader outlooks; coaching tends to focus more on present concerns.
COACHING VS COUNSELLING
Counselling is closer to therapeutic intervention, looking at past barriers and difficulties to help people move forward. Its focus may be internal or external.

Each approach has strengths and limitations and offers value. ‘There is no right or wrong approach, only one that suits you.’ Understanding what you seek is key to choosing a method that fits your needs and wishes.
